Arshile Gorky was one of the leading members of the Abstract Expressionist movement. He also had one of the most tragic lives of a 20th century artist: his mother died of famine in Armenia, he was never close with his father and, in his final years, his studio burned down, he had a colostomy due to cancer, his dominant arm was paralyzed for a stretch after a car accident, his neck was broken and his wife left with his children. At 44 he hanged himself on his broken neck.

"The stuff of thought is the seed of the artist. Dreams form the bristles of the artist's brush. As the eye functions as the brain's sentry, I communicate my innermost perceptions through the art, my world view."
