Dante Gabriel Rossetti was one of the founders of the Pre-Raphaelite movement, which saw itself as a rejection of the studied and academically cold art that followed Raphael. If you look at the paintings, there is certainly something very classically oriented about them, especially when viewed in the frame of the artistically revolutionary 19th century, but there is also a great rebirth in these works, as classical elements are molded into new ideas of form and content. And, viewing these pieces, you can feel a tremendous romanticism driving through the movement, which some maintain is the most romantic art style we've yet had.
